Science is a systematic and organised body of knowledge gained through observation and experiments to understand the natural world.

The word "Science" comes from the Latin word "Scientia", which simply means Knowledge.

The 3 main branches of Science are:

  • 🔵 Physics — Study of force, energy, motion and matter
  • 🟢 Chemistry — Study of the composition of matter and chemical reactions
  • 🟡 Biology — Study of living organisms

💡 Key Insight

Curiosity is the most important quality of a scientist! Every great discovery began with a simple question — "Why?" or "How?"

💡 FUN FACT
The word "Hypothesis" comes from Greek — hypo (under) + thesis (placing). It literally means "putting something forward to be tested"! Scientists have been doing this for over 2,000 years. 🌞

Scientific Method

The Scientific Method is a step-by-step process that scientists use to investigate problems and make discoveries.

🔄 Observation → Question → Hypothesis → Experiment → Data → Conclusion

What each step means:

  • 👀 Observation: Notice something using your senses
  • Question: Ask "Why?" or "How does this happen?"
  • 💡 Hypothesis: Make a testable guess or prediction
  • ⚗️ Experiment: Test your hypothesis in a controlled way
  • 📊 Data Collection: Record all your results carefully
  • Conclusion: Was your hypothesis correct? What did you learn?

⚠️ Important!

Even if the hypothesis is proved wrong, it is still a valuable result! Science is about learning — not about being right every time. 🌱

🔍 EXTRA FACT
Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) was one of the first scientists to use the Scientific Method systematically. He proved that objects of different weights fall at the same speed — by dropping balls from the Leaning Tower of Pisa! 🏔

Laboratory Safety Rules

When working in a laboratory, safety is the highest priority. Chemicals and equipment can be dangerous if not handled carefully.

🛡️ Rules You Must Always Follow:

  • 👓 Always wear safety glasses and an apron
  • 🚫 Never taste or smell any chemical directly
  • 👩‍🏫 Perform experiments only under a teacher's supervision
  • 🧼 Wash your hands thoroughly after every experiment
  • 🍎 No eating or drinking inside the laboratory
  • 🚨 Report any accident or spill immediately to the teacher
  • 🔥 Do not wear loose clothes near a flame or Bunsen burner

🧪 Remember

A clean, organised lab is a safe lab. Always put equipment back in its place after use.

Famous Scientists

India has contributed greatly to science. Here are some important scientists mentioned in your Class 6 curriculum:

  • 🏅 C.V. Raman — Discovered the Raman Effect (1928). Won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
  • 🚀 APJ Abdul Kalam — Known as the "Missile Man of India". Led India's space and defence programmes.
  • ⚛️ Homi Bhabha — Father of India's nuclear programme. Founded TIFR and BARC.
  • 🔢 Aryabhata — Ancient Indian mathematician. Introduced the concept of Zero and calculated the value of Pi.
  • 🌟 Srinivasa Ramanujan — Self-taught mathematical genius who made major contributions to number theory.

🌟 Did You Know?

C.V. Raman was the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in Physics — in 1930! He used very simple equipment to make this extraordinary discovery.
